Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain-Blame It
Music Video
Jamie Foxx's hit "Blame It" is like many other songs in it's genre that promotes specific brands to it's listeners. Rappers enjoy talking about their luxurious lifestyles, often by listing their favorite products. Not surprisingly, many of the brands they name off benefit greatly from their celebrity exposure. Although Jamie Foxx and Busta Rhymes did not get paid to write these songs, after "Pass the Couvoisier," sales increased 4.5% in the first quarter, which brought the company to strike up a promotional deal for Rhymes.

This has led others in the industry to decide to no longer give free advertising in their music, but instead promote their own goods. One such person is the man himself, Jay-Z. In 2002 he struck a deal with Armadale Vodka and acquired the license to become the sole distributor of Armadale in the United States. He mentions his product in his song "All I Need" stating:
"All I need...
Armadale in the club couple o' duckets
Couple chicks by my side, let's ride...
And I'll be on my way"
Another example of a person bringing branded entertainment into the rap industry is Dr. Dre. Pairing with the release of his much anticipated follow-up album, Detox, Dr. Dre has created a new line of Aftermath Cognac. This will contain an 80-proof flavored and unflavored sparkling vodka. By piggybacking on the building anticipation of the album release, the vodka will also be something that fans will be dying to get their hands on.
Like the rest of the entertainment business, rappers seem to be embracing the changes taking place in modern advertising. By simply mentioning a brand in a few of their rhymes, they can increase a its popularity. They are most certainly enjoying reaping the benefits of their influence.
